France train attack hero Stone stabbed in California, Air Force says
Police in California’s capital city say the stabbing of a US airman hailed as a hero for helping stop a gunman on a French train came after a fight near a bar and wasn’t related to terrorism.
Stationed at nearby Travis Air Force Base, Stone was in serious condition late Thursday morning, the hospital said.
The Sacramento Police Department said in a post on its Facebook page that the incident occurred around 12:46 a.m.in downtown Sacramento.
KCRA reports that a man and a woman were questioned at the scene but no arrests were made. Police said Thursday he was stabbed a couple of times and was being treated for “non life-threatening but very significant injuries”.
The stabbing happened in a busy area of central Sacramento ringed with bars and restaurants that is a popular nightlife destination for young adults and is generally considered safe.
The assault does not appear to be hate crime, said police spokeswoman Officer Traci Trapani.
“It looked like a regular bar fight, that was it”, said clerk Ryan Romandia, who watched the footage.
Alek Skarlatos and college student Anthony Sadler – were vacationing in Europe when they took down a gunman and stopped a terror attack on the train.
Bernard said the fight was “related to a nightclub incident” involving Stone’s circle and a second group, but he would not say what sparked the argument.
He was listed in stable condition at UC Davis Medical Center, and officials said he was expected to pull through.
“Everybody send prayers out to the Stone family today”, Skarlatos tweeted.
Armed with a pistol, an assault rifle and 270 rounds of ammunition, Khazzani is accused of seeking to massacre passengers on the Amsterdam-Paris train.
No further details were immediately available.
Stone, who grabbed El Kahzzani while Skarlatos wrestled the weapon away from him, was cut several times with the box cutter in the neck and hand, and he had to undergo reconstructive surgery spending two days in a French hospital.
The three heroes, along with Briton Chris Norman, were awarded France’s highest honour, the Legion d’Honneur, for their bravery.
CCTV footage has emerged showing the moment French-terror attack hero Spencer Stone was repeatedly stabbed outside a club in California.
Skarlatos, 22, also had a near miss last week as he had been due to attend the college in Oregon where a gunman went on a rampage, killing nine people and injuring nine others.
