France train hero Spencer Stone stabbed in California
President Barack Obama spoke to Air Force Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington on September 17.
Spencer Stone, one of three Americans who’d overpowered an armed terror suspect on a French train in August, is in stable condition after he was stabbed Wednesday night in Sacramento, California.
An Air Force spokesperson confirmed to ABC News that Stone has been transported to a local hospital and is now being treated for his injury.
Stone, 23, was called a hero in August, when he and two friends – National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler – charged a gunman who opened fire on an Amsterdam-Paris train. He said there was no evidence the assailants knew who Stone was.
Investigators said the incident was not at all related to any terrorist act.
Ayoub El-Khazzani, a man with ties to radical Islam, had boarded the train with a Kalashnikov rifle, a pistol and a box cutter.
A man was with a group of friends when, during a physical altercation, he was stabbed multiple times in the upper body, police said in a statement.
Local television station KCRA reported that Stone, during a fight in the street near several popular bars in the mid-town section of Sacramento, was stabbed multiple times in the torso. He is said to be in a stable condition.
“The Sacramento Police Department respects the identity of all crime victims and appreciates your patience as we work to provide you with further details”, the police statement said.
Police say a fight led to the stabbing and alcohol was likely a factor.
Heroic… Spencer Stone underwent surgery on his injured hand after he helped stop an attack on a French train in August.
No one has been arrested in connection with the stabbing, police said.
“Everybody send prayers out to the stone family today”, he wrote.
Stone said he was stabbed in the neck and thumb, which had to be reattached.
Last week, Skarlatos left rehearsals for TV’s “Dancing With the Stars” to rush back to his hometown of Roseburg, Oregon, after a gunman killed nine people at the community college that Skarlatos attends.
The soldiers were also given a hometown parade in Sacramento on September 11 and awarded France’s highest honour – the Legion d’Honneur.
