Frances McDormand Begrudgingly Wins ‘Lead Actress’ at the Emmys, Twitter
Co-stars include Emmy nominee Zoe Kazan as Henry’s naïve assistant, Denise, “Friday Night Lights” breakout Jesse Plemons as her (spoiler alert) eventual husband, Jerry, and “The Newsroom’s” John Gallagher Jr.as Olive and Henry’s resentful son, Christopher.
Time to binge-watch “Olive Kitteridge“. But it helps when Academy Award-winning Frances McDormand – beloved in the industry for her devotion to her craft – becomes passionate about a piece of material. “Sometimes that’s enough. Thank you”, she says.
“So [screenwriter Jane Anderson] actually wrote six hours and HBO placed an order for four, but we would love to do more”, said McDormand.
With little to no makeup on, the actress hurried on stage with few smiles as she thanked a few (and we mean few) people.
It was a grand night for HBO, home to best drama series “Game of Thrones“, best comedy series “Veep” and best miniseries “Olive Kitteridge”. Supporting wins in the miniseries/movie category went to Bill Murray for Olive Kitteridge and Regina King for American Crime.
As soon as Kerry Washington said her name for Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series/Movie, the Olive Kitteridge star didn’t seem that impressed.
It’s OK that she resorted to brevity; McDormand had just been onstage to accept the award for lead actress in a limited series or movie. Props to Jill Soloway’s polka-dot pant suit and Lisa Cholodenko’s black version of the same idea. Coincidentally, both won in directing categories, which right there should teach the backwards movie industry a thing or two about women’s ability to step behind the camera.
