Francis Lawrence Hints For Hunger Games Prequel
“Mockingjay – Part 1” opened to $121.9 million domestically following the first film’s $152.5 million launch and “Catching Fire’s”$158.1 million kickoff. Katniss is sent on a mission to fight alongside an elite group of warriors, including childhood friend Gail (Liam Hemsworth), a brainwashed Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and tributes Finnick (Sam Claflin) and Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), to aid the revolution.
It’s a massive opening, but it is still dwarfed by the $274.9 million global debut of “Mockingjay – Part 1”.
Part 2 took in just over $101 million at the box office this weekend, blowing EVERY other movie out of the water in terms of total take for the last couple days.
Investors in Lionsgate, the studio behind the series, reacted negatively to news that “Mockingjay – Part 2” would miss projections, sending the company’s stock down more than 3per cent on Friday.
“If we live in a world where a $100 million opening is a disappointment, that’s pretty insane”, he said. Part 1 didn’t open in China until three months after its domestic release while Part 2 brought in $16.4 million from China this weekend and of all the top countries Part 2 opened in this weekend, they all showed declining numbers. The movie also has a much bigger Chinese box office to tap.
It’s a bold claim to say that this final Hunger Games is the most brutal of the four films considering it’s a series about kids being thrown into an arena and forced to kill one another for sport.
The company said Saturday that “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” opened as No. 1 in 84 of 89 markets worldwide, with “strong performances” in territories including Germany, the United Kingdom, Mexico and Brazil.
Two debuts made the top five list: “The Night Before”, at $10.1 million and “Secret In Their Eyes” at $6.6 million. The R-rated film cost about $25 million to produce.
Whether it bests the biggest grosser of all time – “Avatar”, with $2.8 billion worldwide – depends on word of mouth and whether fans love it enough to watch it multiple times through the new year.
“The movie’s showing is driven by reviews and great word-of-mouth from the festival circuit”, TWC distribution chief Erik Lomis said, adding that 62 percent Carol’s audience was female, while almost 60 percent of all ticket buyers were over the age of 50. The third movie had a precipitous drop from the first two movies, but this was believed to be because it was only the first part of a two part release. The violent gangster picture about the Kray twins saw Tom Hardy doing double duty as the crime boss brothers, but critics were lukewarm, and the picture nabbed a so-so US$83,000 from four theatres for a per-screen average of US$20,271. Roughly $146 million of its total came from foreign territories.
