Frank Vatrano lifts Bruins over Red Wings in overtime
After being positively dominated for the second and third periods and only trailing by a 2-1 score thanks to the play of Jonas Gustavsson, the B’s managed to score a late goal in regulation and cap the overtime period with Frank Vatrano’s second goal of the game.
The three stars of the game are Frank Vatrano who scored two goals.
“He said, ‘Just 400 more to go to catch Brett Hull, ‘” Zetterberg said. “Our young kids did a great job for us tonight”.
Mrazek made 19 saves in the loss.
“It’s still discouraging when you see where you are (28th in the league stats in PK)”, Julien said. “But it was a nice shot by him”. With just a point separating the two teams, a win would help out either team as they both sit close to the top spot in the Atlantic Division. They had earned at least one point in a game in which they didn’t deserve any for 58 minutes. Matt Beleskey made a backhanded pass to Colin Miller in the offensive zone, and Miller fought through a poke check to deliver a hard shot toward Vatrano’s stick, where it went into the back of the net. Defenseman Colin Miller also scored for Boston, his second of the season.
Congratulations to Pavel Datsyuk on his 300th goal.
“They came out and had a lot of pressure at the net….”
The Red Wings are on a run of their own, going 3-0-1 in the last four contests, and rookie Dylan Larkin has led the way with a goal in each contest.
Detroit Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek (34) stops a Boston Bruins…
“I thought we did lots of great stuff, to be honest with you”, Blashill said.
It was Tatar’s seventh goal of the season, tying him for second on the team with Gustav Nyquist.
Gustavsson stopped Datsyuk from the right circle 5:32 into the first period. As much as the setback stung, they did play solidly for most of the night and controlled the game in terms of shots, puck possession and zone time. “But what’s important is we found a way to come back”.
The Bruins won Monday night in Toronto, but coach Claude Julien wasn’t terribly pleased with the game his team played. “We’ve got to build on that”.
This was the first of six games that Detroit would host at home and would do it without Landon Ferraro. Ferraro was drafted by the Red Wings in the second round in 2009, 32nd overall.
For the second straight game, the Bruins suffered a letdown in the second period. The B’s weren’t so fortunate the second time around, as McQuaid sent the puck over the glass for a delay of game penalty.
