Fred Jackson Visits Bills Fan
Jackson signed a one year deal with Seattle on Friday after being cut by the Bills earlier in the week.
Between Jackson’s price, age, and increasingly smaller role in the offense, it made sense that the Bills would cut him, even if he was a popular, stable face of the franchise.
Jackson was released on August. 31, and he told The Buffalo News’ Tim Graham that the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks called him “within an hour” of the move. “It was one of the things, as soon as I hit the waiver wire, I got that phone call, and I think he has a lot to do with me being here”.
If reports are true about Whaley going “rogue” in this decision, I’d imagine it will be more than just the fan base questioning Whaley if things don’t work out. He played with Jackson in Buffalo from 2007-2010, and the two have remained close according to Jackson, helping him choose Seattle as his next, and maybe final (sorry for the pun), National Football League destination.
Jackson, a Bills captain, entered training camp as the NFL’s oldest running back at 34.
The two shared starting duties during the 2009 season and Jackson took over as the starter after the Bills traded Lynch to Seattle.
Jackson turned 34 this year, ancient for a running back, and he averaged a career-low 3.7 yards per carry last season.
And not just because their newest running back is a proven, third-down back they need for their passing game.
Because he did, Carroll said Jackson is not only going to play in Sunday’s opener at St. Louis, he’s going to play “a lot”. That has worked well for them, and you can’t blame them.
“Aw, man, the fans in Buffalo are tremendous”, Jackson said Monday.
Seattle coach Pete Carroll and Jackson will meet the media after practice this afternoon. He’ll be at my house playing with my kids, and I’ll treat him just like he’s one of them.
Western New York hearts still on the mend as Jackson rejoins former Bills teammate Marshawn Lynch on a Super Bowl contender.
The coach said “we’re ready to start Dion” Bailey, a 2014 practice-squad player, at strong safety Sunday in place of Chancellor. Carroll confirmed a couple of teams have called to see if Chancellor might be available via trade.
The trade for McCray was to add depth with experience in the secondary. “We are really not interested in talking to them about that”.
