Freddie Roach: I think we won the fight
I’d have had him throwing a lot more punches and using his left hook in the fight instead of wasting time just throwing jabs and right hands, which had no effect in stopping the much heavier looking Canelo.
“We are both great fighters and are coming to give a great fight on November 21”, stated Cotto on Tuesday in Mexico City.
And in case there is any doubt about, the 2015 New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame inductee De la Hoya’s claims, his champ made it crystal clear when he boasted after the fight, “I’m not afraid of anyone”.
Golovkin was among the 11,274 spectators inside Mandalay Bay watching. “I can be champion of whatever I want in my own house”, Cotto said in the Denver Post report. His goal? Unify the belts in the middleweight division. An Alvarez vs Golovkin match-up is seen by many as a potential huge fight because of the attacking style of both fighters. We’ll see. But, is he gonna fight Golovkin? Roach trained Oscar De La Hoya in his showdown with Mayweather in 2007, then worked the corner of Manny Pacquiao during his turn to face the former pound-for-pound king last May. But if you want me to fight him right now, I’ll fight him right now. Those dates had been the domain of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Those words, as De La Hoya knows as well as anyone, will ring hollow unless the promoter keeps answering the bell and delivering.
“Well, we would be open to it – absolutely”. In 2013, it was the old buck defeating the young buck and retiring from the sport two years later.
A stipulation that allowed the fight to happen was that the victor had 15 days after the fight to begin negotiations with Gennady Golovkin, the WBC’s mandatory No. 1 contender and holder of the World Boxing Assn. and worldwide Boxing Federation middleweight belts. Golovkin who was present during the fight said: “I’m ready for this, me and Canelo”, he said. So the question is will he stay at 154 or stay at 160. Canelo beat Miguel Cotto 117-111, 119-109 and 118-110 to win the vacant title by unanimous decision, reports FoxSports. The Mexican weighed in at exactly that on Friday, but appeared bigger than Cotto – who weighed in at 153.5 – after rehydrating.
“Look, I can take a page from my mentor Bob Arum’s book and say, ‘Well, you’ve got to let it marinate, ‘ or I can go and say, ‘Let’s go!”
“Do I think that Canelo won? If we do a fight, it’s going to be at my weight class”.
“If it’s over, it’s over”.
“I would love it [a rematch with Mayweather]”. What better way to earn that throne is to fight for it in the ring.
Roach preaches about how good Cotto’s defense was versus Alvarez.
