Free agent point guard Ty Lawson joins Sacramento Kings
Collison was the team’s backup last season behind Rajon Rondo-who recently left to become a member of the Chicago Bulls. He was traded to IN in the middle of the season, where his numbers slipped into career-lows IN points per game, assists and shooting percentages. If Lawson can stay healthy then look for him to do what he did in Denver.
Despite being signed back onto an National Basketball Association team with a real shot of becoming a starting point guard, Lawson carries a history of driving under the influence and causing issues off the court. Instead, the Rockets ended up releasing Lawson in the middle of the season. His assist to turnover ratio in 2014-2015 was a stellar 3.89, which put him second in the league behind Chris Paul. Then the next year he performed well and got consistently better. Most players don’t fall off like this at the age of 28, but Lawson didn’t exactly give many reasons to be optimistic past year, either.
The team badly needed a veteran point guard to help kick-start a new season it hopes will produce its first playoff berth in a decade. Collison is a fine point guard, but has never been as dynamic with the ball in his hands as Lawson was at his peak in Denver. At Oklahoma, Cousins played only one season at point guard after moving from shooting guard.
Lawson will be given plenty of opportunities to generate offense and kick out to open shooters, and Willie Cauley-Stein will be more than happy to take advantage of the sky-high lobs that were once the province of Kenneth Faried. Besides Lawson’s defensive flaws (partially due to his height), he would have control of running plays from Dave Joerger and would fit right into the “Mike Conley” role for Dave Joerger.
The Kings are lucky in that they have very little to lose by giving out a contract to Ty Lawson.
As of the moment, Lawson is one of the most significant acquisitions the Kings had this off-season.
Hopefully, Lawson can return to his old self with the Kings.
The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Lawson is entering his eighth National Basketball Association season.
