Maryland’s next drive covered 87 yards in nine plays, the last of them a 22-yard touchdown run by Ross.
The Maryland Terrapins vs Indiana Hoosiers today in a game on the college football schedule which sees both Big Ten teams struggling through faltering 2015 seasons, with both stuck in the middle of long term losing streaks, and each trying to find their way to a win.
IN quarterback Nate Sudfeld, left, looks for a receiver as he… On the ensuing drive, Terrapins defensive end Yannick Ngakoue came up with a strip-sack at the IN 20-yard line.
After Ross’s 75-yard touchdown dash opened the second half and made it 28-30, it was all IN the rest of the way.
“If it’s 28-3 we’re down or 28-3 we’re up, we’ve got to keep playing”, he said. “I would have preferred the other choice, being up 28-3, but I guess they took the other advice and wanted to go down”. Sudfeld took charge in his absence and completed 23-of-35 passes for 385 yards and four touchdowns. It also marked the team’s fifth-straight loss under interim head coach Mike Locksley.
Maryland (2-9, 0-7) lost its eighth in row despite getting 250 yards rushing from Brandon Ross, the fourth-most in school history. A win at Purdue next Saturday will get Kevin Wilson’s team to six wins and keep their coach comfortably in charge of his program. The Maryland senior was picking up huge chunks of yardage and scoring touchdowns, doing his best to help the Terrapins match scores with Indiana. The Hoosiers recovered and marched 51 yards in two minutes flat, capped by Sudfeld’s one-yard sneak.
Maryland’s offense, meanwhile, gave Ross just four carries in the second quarter and attempted to establish the passing game behind Rowe (10 of 19 passing, 88 yards).
An IN turnover followed, and Rowe turned it onto a 14-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Culmer for a 21-3 lead with 9 1/2 minutes elapsed. “I wish we could have gotten the win, but personally, it felt good to have that kind of game and really jump-start the offense”.
The Hoosiers didn’t blink. Sudfeld had two touchdown tosses, including a 59-yarder to wide receiver Andre Booker, and the senior quarterback ran for a score. Maryland had no answer for Sudfeld despite Indiana’s top running back Jordan Howard leaving with an injury.
Maryland tried to reverse its 2nd quarter fortunes by attempting a fake punt on its next possession, but Anthony Nixon fumbled the snap.
