Marin County no longer holds the title for one of the highest rates of breast cancer in the world.

“So far it has been successful but the toll that it takes on the families, not just the survivor or victim of breast cancer but it’s far reaching beyond that”, said BC Peterson.

The current state of youth culture tends to look beyond health and medical conditions that lead to traumatic life experiences. “That is their survivorship”. Breast cancer is the number one cancer, and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in Arkansas. It is open to women of all ages based on their individual situation and family history.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and one fire department is out to fight the cause.

Alison says she is lucky to now live in New Zealand, having moved from the United Kingdom where they don’t provide free screenings until the age of 50.

“I like bringing that positive interaction and positive awareness, and getting it out there”, he said.

“We believe the media can assist with this because newspapers, TV and radio have a huge influence on our lives”, she said.
