French finance, foreign ministers to attend G20
Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend thetenth summit of the Group of Twenty (G20) on November 14-16 in Antalya, Turkey.
Malcolm Turnbull will join other G20 leaders in a working dinner discussion on terrorism and Syria.
“Mr. Trudeau could well promise more money to the WFP, UN HCR, WHO, promise to take more refugees in 2016, and inspire other G20 leaders to do so, too”, he says.
Moderator Haluk Unal, professor at University of Maryland and Special Advisor to the Center for Financial Research of the FDIC, indicated that the global economic growth was still slow.
Turnbull’s G20 programme for Saturday afternoon involves meeting the summit host, the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and the Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe.
At the 2013 summit in St Petersburg, Russia, the leaders discussed the Syrian crisis and the measures to be taken to prevent the use of chemical weapons.
Finally, the results of the Antalya Summit will be announced globally with a press conference by the Turkish President.
For instance, Turkey tried to influence the political change in Egypt by supporting ousted President Mohamed Morsi. Unal suggested that unless China makes the shift from an investment based economy to consumption based economy, the global growth outlook was going to remain as a concern for the G20 leaders.
Several officials said reference would be made to the migration crisis in a communique, meaning the wording would have to be agreed by all G20 members, although they doubted it would go far beyond platitudes. US President Barack Obama, who denounced the act as outrageous and gruesome, is also scheduled to attend the summit.
Obama is however nearly certain to hold one-on-one talks with Erdogan, and is likely try to ease differences over the fight against Islamic State in Syria, especially the role of Kurdish fighters. Unfortunately, an end to the refugee crisis will only come when there is a solution to the Syrian civil war, and that does not seem imminent. Turkey has also underlined the need to create a no-fly zone over the same area.
Mr Turnbull will also meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Saturday.
“The G20 must rise to the challenge and lead a co-ordinated and innovative response to the crisis that recognizes its global nature and economic consequences and promotes greater worldwide solidarity in protecting refugees”, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk write in a letter sent last week to EU heads of state.
Turkish term presidency does not only aim at a robust, sustainable and balanced growth, but also an inclusive one. “I think they will live through an AntalyaSummit that they can not forget”, he said.
G20 countries account for 85 percent of the world economy, 75 percent of world trade and a-third of the world’s population.
Meanwhile, other than Malaysia, the other countries invited to attend are Zimbabwe, as African Union chairman, Senegal representing the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), Azerbaijan and Singapore.
