French Train Attack Hero Spencer Stone “Repeatedly” Stabbed, in Critical Condition
Bernard said officers who arrived at the scene found Stone with multiple stab wounds to his upper torso. Stone was out with friends when an altercation occurring around 12:45 am on October 8 led to him being stabbed multiple times in the upper body. He said Stone is being treated in a hospital in the Sacramento area.
The grainy footage shows a man who appears to be Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone fighting with several people at an intersection. He said police don’t believe it had anything to do with Stone’s celebrity, and a conversation between Stone’s group – a male friend and three female friends – and another group somewhere in midtown led to the assault “down the block”.
Stone, 23, and two of his childhood friends from a Sacramento suburb, Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler, took down a gunman on a crowded Paris-bound passenger train in August.
Police in California’s capital city say the stabbing of a US airman hailed as a hero for helping stop a gunman on a French train came after a fight near a bar and wasn’t related to terrorism.
Police said they do not know whether Stone was drinking, but others in his group were.
Police said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the assault.
There has been an outpouring of support for Stone online from all over the world, with many from an appreciative France who still remember his efforts to foil that suspected terrorist attack.
Stone, who has been acclaimed for his aggressive role in disarming the gunman, had undergone medical treatment at a military base in Germany for a lacerated thumb and other injuries he suffered in the attack. Authorities say it doesn’t appear to be a random act.
Skarlatos also tweeted Thursday: “Everybody send prayers out to the Stone family today”.
Stone was originally listed in critical condition, but was updated to stable.
No one has been arrested in connection with the stabbing, police said.
A US Air Force spokesman confirmed that 23-year-old Airman Spencer Stone had been injured in his home state of California and taken to a local hospital.
France awarded the three Americans and a Briton with the country’s highest honor, the Legion d’honneur, for helping to disarm the man.
