And yet, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s win in New York’s 14th Congressional district primary is nothing short of incredible.

Progressive journalists who have covered Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign for months noted that her victory was indicative of a shift away from well-funded establishment Democratic candidates not just in her district, but nationwide.
“It was a complete shock”, she said of her victory over Crowley, the fourth-ranking House Democrat. “We need to elect a corporate PAC-free caucus if we’re going to get things done”. “It is not to be viewed as something that stands for everything else”.
Ocasio-Cortez defeated longtime Representative Joseph Crowley in the Democratic congressional primary in New York Tuesday night, winning 57.5 percent of the vote. There are almost 236,000 Democrats registered in the 14th Congressional District, which covers parts of the Bronx and Queens. “Alexandria and I are joining together to take on the old boys club, rejecting corporate money and run people-powered campaigns that envision a progressive NY that serves the many, not just the few who can afford to buy influence”.

To underscore that position, she even traveled to the U.S. -Mexico border region days before the election to protest the separation of immigrant families. “People would be like, ‘You have to talk to her, she’s awesome'”.
Passing laws that support working families and work to lift Americans out of poverty is “absolutely possible”, added Ocasio-Cortez, “but it takes the political courage to do it”.
More Democratic candidates would do well to follow Ocasio-Cortez’s lead. She was also involved with the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground, which strives to bring together students from diverse backgrounds, and studied overseas in Niger, according to the BU student paper, the Daily Free Press. “The first step is a choice”.
Sullivan, who also works in politics, said voters have been desparate for leadership, and Ocasio-Cortez delivers.

Crowley may have underestimated his opponent, who until recently was working as a bartender and organizing for Bernie Sanders.
Following Ms Ocasio-Cortez’s win, dictionary Merriam-Webster tweeted that socialism emerged as their top search item. If so, she could be the awakening of a real political revolution. “She understands it, she’s lived it”, Fernandez said. “She is rising at the flawless time”.
Rebecca Katz, a New York-based Democratic strategist advising Cynthia Nixon’s insurgent gubernatorial campaign against incumbent Democrat Andrew Cuomo, said Washington was caught off guard because Mr. Crowley lost touch with his district.
