Friend of San Bernardino Shooter to Be Charged, Officials Say
This July 27, 2014 photo provided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection shows Tashfeen Malik, left, and Syed Farook, as they passed through O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.
Enrique Marquez, longtime friend of San Bernardino gunman Syed Farook, will be criminally charged by federal prosecutors partly over his alleged role in supplying the weapons used in a massacre that killed 14 people.
Farook and Malik were killed in a police shootout hours after their assault.
Law enforcement officials spoke with NBC, saying Enrique Marquez is the first person to face criminal charges stemming from the San Bernardino shooting.
Marquez, 24, checked himself into a mental hospital shortly after the December 2 slaughter.
It’s unclear what information federal agents learned in the days since. While he says that he was unaware of the couple’s plan for San Bernardino, Marquez also said that his purchase of guns was a favor so that Farook would not have to go through a background check or be the recorded purchaser.
In November 2012, Sohiel Omar Kabir, a native of Afghanistan and former Pomona resident; Ralph Deleon of Ontario; Miguel Alejandro Santana Vidriales of Upland; and Arifeen David Gojali of Riverside, were arrested on suspicion of plotting to travel overseas and commit violent jihad against American military targets.
FBI Director James Comey said on Wednesday that contrary to previous reports, investigators have not found any social media postings by Malik that would identify her as a terrorist prior to her coming to the US, reported NBC News. His wife and the wife of Farook’s older brother are sisters.
