From Donald Glover To Zendaya: Who’s Who In ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

While she says she’ll figure something else out to tell the press, he still grabs the sparkler from Happy and that’s the last we see of them.

When it was announced Peter Parker was being sent back to high school, yet again, I was naturally skeptical.

Alfred Molina was superb as Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2, and while it would be a hard task to top his performance, there are plenty of other great actors who could take on the role of Doc Ock – especially if the character was reinvented a little for the MCU. It’s no surprise that fans of the film (including comic book writers) have thanked Bendis for laying the groundwork for Homecoming. It takes a while before Watts seems to know what to do with Keaton.

Watts is also unsure exactly how Peter and May’s conversation will play out-or whether we’ll get a glorious flashback of Tomei raining hellfire down on her movie-nephew-but he strongly implies that this will change things in the status quo, including possibly Avengers: Infinity War (where we’ll next see Tom Holland as Spider-Man). However, he will at least agree that calling Zendaya’s character an MJ of a different name does underscore she will have some similarities to comicdom’s most famous redhead. That leaves Parker stuck playing the “friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man”, saving cats and helping old ladies cross the streets until a fortuitous meeting with some thugs leads him directly down the path of a shady arms dealer who flies around in a mechanical vulture suit, aptly named Vulture (Michael Keaton).

This might feel jarring because the animated cartoon show and the comics liked to make a show of the whole thing.

The fundamental problem facing Jon Watts is, quite simply, that it’s all been done before. Marc Webb more so understood Spider-Man but really missed on the Parker stuff.

“The AR experience for Homecoming is much more tailored to the audience’s love for photos and sharing”, said Yim.

She’s got a point. And probably going back to Spider-Man 2, I would sort of carry that issue around and go, ‘We should do this someday, we should do this someday.’ And it was great luck that it hadn’t been done yet.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t still trolls, though, who’ve been making their critiques of the film known for months, now, even if everything they have to say is pretty ridiculous.

While there may well be an element of racism among some of those who object to these casting choices, it’s worth noting that there are other reasons. While it’s cool to see Spidey team up with the Avengers, it’s so refreshing to finally have a true high school drama that is, in turn, a great Spider-Man film.
