Full fledged test of Odd Even scheme in Delhi today after weekend
Like a bunch of earnest students swotting for their board exams, the Delhi government spent a month preparing for the crucial Monday test of its odd-even experiment that aims to curb pollution and congestion in the national capital. “Delhi Metro might be ferrying 32 lakh passengers as an alternative of 27 lakh day by day”, he informed ANI.
Additional 100 teams of traffic police have been deployed to ensure the enforcement of the scheme that will stay in force till January 15, on weekdays from 8 am to 8 pm.
Delhi government has claimed to have made elaborate arrangements to address the inconvenience arising out of implementation of the Odd-even scheme. As per the scheme, even number cars will ply today on Delhi roads from 8 in the morning to 8 in the evening.
Kejriwal said that the radical initiative of the AAP government has received widespread acceptance among the people and that Delhi would “show the way” to the rest of the country.
Gopal Rai, who is Delhi’s Transport Minister, on Sunday held a meeting with senior officers from the city’s Traffic Police, Delhi Police, civil defence forces, Metro officials and other agencies.
Even as metro stations experienced extra rush and junctions such as Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate saw long queues of commuters waiting to board a train, Delhi residents took to the social media to hail the policy and pointed out how they had reached their destinations quicker due to the reduced numbers of cars on the road.
Apart from this, 1,000 school buses of DTC have also been roped in, considering the natural escalation in number of commuters, Transport Minister Gopal Rai minister said. “This itself is an indication that the mindset of people for environment is changing and I salute all Delhiites for this two days’ success”, Rai added.
