Full report awaited after coroner says Illinois police officer died of single

Wednesday’s statement from the village said the “clean slate” review is “standard and considered a best practice whenever there is a change in leadership at a law enforcement agency”.

An Illinois police officer found dead last week after telling dispatchers he was pursuing three suspicious men suffered a “single devastating” gunshot wound, according to a coroner who said Wednesday that he can’t yet rule whether the death was a homicide, suicide or an accident.

“The coroner should not release sensitive case information while an investigation is still under way, it’s completely irresponsible”, Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose said of Dr. Thomas A. Rudd. “We don’t have anybody that’s come to the police and say, ‘We’ve seen certain individuals leave the scene at this hour at this day, they looked like they were this tall, they were of this ethnicity or race, they looked like they weighed this much.’ We don’t have anything”.

Rudd would not comment on what evidence made him favor homicide.

Officials have described the suspects as two white men and one black man. No additional details, such as clothing, height, or weight were given by Gliniewicz during a radio call just prior to his death, Lake County Major Crime Task Force Commander George Filenko said at a news conference.

The coroner said his office has not ruled out the possibility of suicide or accident, pending further forensic test results. Filenko will not say whether the weapon was used to kill Gliniewicz.

Rudd declined to reveal how many times 52-year-old Gliniewicz was shot or where.

Behan said Gliniewicz had also been a recent candidate for the job of police chief in Antioch, the officer’s hometown.

Regarding the investigation into the officer’s death, Filenko said Tuesday that officers have pursued some 185 leads but haven’t found any other video that is “relevant to the investigation”.

He also said that whether the bullet came from Gliniewicz’s own gun or another gun is another part of his investigation that can’t be completed until he gets the report from the task force.
