Funeral being held for boy killed during police pursuit in Louisiana
His father was listed in fair condition at a hospital in Alexandria, Louisiana, a spokeswoman said.
Both men work part-time for the Marksville City Marshal. The reason for the shooting remains unclear.
Eli Baylis/Hattiesburg American/Associated Press Pallbearers carry the casket of 6-year-old Jeremy Mardis to the grave site at Beaumont Cemetery in Beaumont, Mississippi, 30 miles east of Hattiesburg on Monday.
“Let’s make tonight about Jeremy Mardis”.
Jeremy’s first-grade special needs teacher Roxanne Couvillion said the boy loved class, playing and alphabet puzzles. She said the school brought in a crisis team to counsel classmates and staff.
Stafford and Greenhouse, who were working for the Marksville city marshal, are charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.
A judge today jailed Greenhouse Jr, 23, and Stafford, 32, on a $1million bail each. “Shame, shame, shame”, Scott said.
Relaying a description of what the video captured, an attorney for Mr. Few said his client had his hands up and posed no threat when the marshals opened fire.
Jeremy’s funeral was scheduled be held Monday in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Two other police officers, in addition to Greenhouse and Stafford, were involved in the chase, the superintendent said, but he declined to say whether either of the other officers was suspected of wrongdoing. Both officers were formally charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. “That little boy was buckled in the front seat of that vehicle and that is how he died”, Edmonson said.
The lawyer said he still hasn’t seen the video, but its contents were described to the judge during the hearing.
Why did officers pursue and target the father, Chris Few? Stafford, a lieutenant with the Marksville Police Department, has worked for the department for eight years.
The bond hearing was closed to the public and press.
Still, a few of those gathered outside the sheriff’s office later Monday morning were skeptical that justice would be served.
Jeansonne said Few is improving, but he still does not know about his son’s death.
Other defendants include Marksville Police Chief Elster Smith, the City of Marksville and Avoyelles Parish District Attorney Charles Riddle.
Riddle says the episode is “not good for any of us”.
Norris Greenhouse (left) and Derrick Stafford (right) are being kept seperate from the jail’s general population. He had recently moved from Mississippi to Louisiana. Authorities are still trying to unravel what happened Tuesday evening.
Adds the AP report: “Few’s 57-year-old stepfather, Morris German, earlier in the week accused the marshals of indiscriminately opening fire on the vehicle”.
Louisiana State Police announced late Friday that they had arrested the two marshals and say they’re still investigating the incident, which raised questions nearly from the beginning.
