Funeral plans set for the late great rocker Gregg Allman
Allman’s son, Devon Allman, tells Billboard he’s hoping to organize a public celebration of Allman’s life and music later this year, time around Gregg’s birth date of December 8.
Gregg Allman’s memorial will be held on Saturday in his hometown of Macon, Georgia. You need to decide what’s important to you and get there before it’s too late. To experience their sound, you can listen to that album here.
Allman worked with Jackson Browne on one song, adding that Browne was one of Allman’s closest friends in the rock business, going back to when both were teenagers.
The death of founding member Gregg Allman on Saturday at 69 brought back to me countless memories of dozens of their shows I attended over 25 years. Although older and wiser, Allman’s past caught up with him; he went public with his Hepatitis C diagnosis in 2007 and underwent a liver transplant in 2010.
“I make my living/ Pouring out my pain”.
The extent of the band’s influence is beyond measure.
Allman was only 21 when he and older brother Duane formed the Allman Brothers Band in 1969, but his singing on the group’s debut album is imbued with a feeling as ancient and indomitable as the most rugged, weather-beaten mountain in the land.
The band’s main songwriter early on, Mr. Allman contributed expansive, emotionally fraught compositions like “Dreams” and “Whipping Post” to the Allman Brothers repertoire. During the last months of his illness he really wanted privacy. I’d never heard the name before. And I’m bound to keep on riding.
Of course, it wasn’t all smooth-sailing.
Cher and Allman were known for their tumultuous relationship which resulted in marriage three days after her divorce from Sonny Bono was finalised.
He said: “He would think or talk about Duane nearly every day”.
“So I said I might have to sleep on this”. It’s like two clicks from a damn insult and he knew it when he said it. “So I think that’s the first step”. Songs such as “You Don’t Love Me” and “Hot ‘Lanta” seemed to spring from the gate at full sprint and carried momentum without any noodling and little self-indulgence. It’s the Allman Brothers’ annual New York City Beacon Theater run, in March 2011.
He said it was the stage that always offered the ultimate high.
Y’know, when you meet him, you meet what you see – very quiet, genuine, very down-to-earth guy, just very easy to talk to and just one of the lads. “There were so many times that we spent there in so many situations, whether we were recording at Capricorn Records or whether we were rehearsing in Macon or when we would do shows in Macon”.
“It was captivating.” Haynes also speaks on Allman’s role in the band, which he says was that of a reluctant leader.
In recognition of his career, Allman was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 1995.
Allman had a hard life, in many ways.
Allman died peacefully and surrounded by loved ones at his home near Savannah, his manager, Michael Lehman, told The Associated Press.
Here’s the best I could do at pairing the awesome catalogue down to a baker’s dozen songs.
Musicians like Peter Frampton, John Mayer and Keith Urban expressed their condolences following news of Allman’s death.
