Furniture Row is heading to Toyota
On top of that, Truex is a quality driver who has been looking for a consistent team that would steadily carry him higher in the standings each year.
On Sunday morning it was made official that Martin Truex Jr. has been re-signed by Furniture Row Racing for the 2016 Sprint Cup season. FRR will now get technical data from Joe Gibbs Racing and be the manufacturer’s fifth factory-backed team for 2016.
“As we continue our quest to be a contender for this year’s Sprint Cup championship, it’s hard not to feel the excitement and enthusiasm of becoming an integral partner with Toyota next season”, Furniture Row team president Joe Garone said in a statement.
As part of its move to Toyota, Furniture Row Racing will join in a technical alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing from which it will receive chassis and engines, sources said. On Saturday, Motorsport.com reported that those rumors have been confirmed and the team will announce they will indeed move to Toyota for the 2016 season. This looks to be beneficial for the team considering the recent stretch of luck that the JGR Toyota’s have been having on the Sprint Cup level. FRR is now in a technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing, a pairing which will discontinue at season’s end. His season totals to date include one win, seven top fives, 17 top-10s and 536 laps led. “He and crew chief Cole Pearn have established an outstanding chemistry”. Toyota needed a second partner to Joe Gibbs Racing with the closure of Michael Waltrip Racing after this season, although Toyota had started talks with Furniture Row before the MWR decision to close after this season.
Truex has found a home at Furniture Row, a one-car operation based in Denver, Colorado, far removed from NASCAR’s North Carolina hub.
The 35-year-old Truex said he is ready to rejoin Toyota.
“It’s not just the place, it’s the people – especially this year”, he said.
