Fury dethrones world heavyweight champion Klitschko
He had warned Klitschko that he had never faced anyone like him before and he was exactly right. There were few exchanges in the final round with each trying to get ahead on points.
A big left from Fury caught Klitschko flush in the face in the ninth round before the champion finally got his right-hand jab going as he went on the attack and landed a shot directly on Fury’s chin. “I waited in line and earned the right to fight”.
The Manchester native, a former Irish heavyweight champion, produced a disciplined display which was completely at odds with his brazed and vocal pre-fight approach. Significantly, power blows constituted the bulk of Fury’s punches that found their mark.
And while he was happy to trash-talk his rival during the build-up to the fight, afterwards he was full of respect for “a great champion”. They demanded the champion cut them off and start again, delaying the start. I don’t think for a second that Fury would have been able to beat the 2004 version of Wladimir.
A very close round with Klitschko picking up the pace with the challenger starting to slow down.
In the seventh he was the clear aggressor, landing a flurry of shots as he started to demonstrate his prowess as a switch-hitter, adopting the southpaw stance to keep Klitschko on his toes. Now that Fury has three of the four heavyweight world title belts, fans’ gaze has turned towards a possible unification fight with the owner of the last heavyweight belt: the American Bronze Bomber Deontay Wilder.
Fury has come out fighting in an orthodox style. That averaged 7 punches landed for every 31 thrown per round. The atmosphere is insane with the champ walking out to Red Hot Chili Peppers’ song Can’t Stop.
Ukraine’s Wladimir Klitschko’s dominating run in boxing’s heavyweight division is over. He struggled to work him out, suffered damage around both eyes and at the end accepted the loss of his WBA, IBF and WBO titles with dignity.
Today’s fight is the first time the Ukrainian boxer has fought an opponent with a height, weight and reach advantage.
Fury’s in-ring taunts followed a buildup to the bout in which he dressed as Batman and serenaded Klitschko with insults.
