Furyk cards PGA Tour record at Travelers Championship
Jim Furyk described his record-shattering 58 as “phenomenal” as he reflected on his historic final round at the Travelers Championship. Furyk’s 27 did, however, set a new course record for the front nine.
That made Furyk the 11th golfer in PGA Tour history to shoot 27 for a nine – but 27 isn’t the tour’s 9-hole scoring record.
And it could have been even lower.
The round did not have a bogey or worse, as Furyk shot 10 birdies, one eagle, and seven pars.
“It was one of those weeks where you could easily see playing great next week or the week after”, Watson said, before getting on a plane for Rio de Janeiro.
Furyk began the day 16 shots back of leader Daniel Berger in 70th place at one-over 211 after opening 73-66-71. Bill Haas, and Jon Rahm tied for third place at 13 under par, while Els finished fifth at 12 under par.
It might not have happened if Furyk had not gone this road before.
He had been the sixth and last golfer to post a 59 on the PGA Tour, doing it at the 2013 BMW Championship. “They kept wanting to plan a 40th anniversary of the 59 for next year, and I said you can’t do that”. The Conway Farms course Furyk played that day was a par-71 course, so he was 12-under that day, too.
“I know I turned at eight under par”.
Ryo Ishikawa shot a 58 in The Crowns on the Japan Golf Tour in 2010.
Just last week on the web.com tour, Stephan Jaeger shot a 58 at the Ellie Mae Classic in Hayward, California.
Furyk is the only player with sub-60 rounds twice. After his ball pitched onto the 15th green and disappeared into the hole, Hurley raised both arms in celebration, then pumped his fist as the crowd roared. His 58 puts him four shots off the lead before the leaders tee off.
Pennsylvania-born Furyk, 46, a 17-times victor on tour, has made a career out of his machine-like consistency with his unique swing, and he was in that mode on Sunday, hitting all 18 greens in regulation.
