Gabby Giffords’ gun safety group endorses Toomey re-election
“Sending Pat Toomey back to the Senate makes gun-safety legislation less likely, not more likely”, he said.
Along with Sens. Susan Collins of ME and John McCain of Arizona, Toomey and Kirk were the only four Republicans to vote for a bipartisan compromise on a gun control bill after Sandy Hook known as Manchin-Toomey that would have expanded background checks on private gun sales.
McGinty said no endorsement is actually worse than Toomey being pro-Trump.
Pennsylvania Democrats quickly hit back at the endorsement, saying Toomey “isn’t a moderate on guns, period”. While he didn’t endorse Kirk’s senatorial run, President Barack Obama did send the senator a thank you note for meeting with the president’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, in March. “And I’m confident Pennsylvanians just aren’t going to buy it”.
McGinty and other Democrats have expressed skepticism about Toomey’s efforts. The former congresswoman survived a mass shooting in her district, and has since become a gun control champion.
While both Erica Smegielski and Gabrielle Giffords delivered heartfelt addresses at last month’s Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, each has now endorsed incumbent U.S. Sen. “Those underestimating the significance of this endorsement are only trying to fool themselves”, Burn tweeted.
Toomey also is endorsed by billionaire Michael Bloomberg, another gun control advocate.
He gave up too easily after teaming up in 2013 with West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin to introduce a bill expanding background checks, she said.
The two sitting Senators voted in favor of gun control proposals after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, where 20 children were killed.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spent big to get Katie McGinty through the primary.
Other topics on McGinty’s radar included gun control. But his campaign did not wait that long to respond to McGinty’s charges. He also appeared at the Democratic National Convention to speak in favor of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. It portrays McGinty as stronger on gun control _ McGinty supports banning the sale of assault weapons and imposing a federal limit on magazine capacity, while Toomey does not _ and shows video of Toomey last month telling an audience, “I have had a ideal record with the NRA”.
Giffords and Kelly wrote that their endorsement decision was hard, calling Toomey’s opponent, Katie McGinty, “a passionate advocate for gun violence prevention” who “would be a consistent vote for life-saving gun safety laws in the Senate”.
Duckworth spokesman Matt McGrath said the overarching factor for voters to consider is that Kirk backs Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who make it nearly impossible for bills to curb gun violence advance in the Senate. McGinty now has an edge in various public opinion polls, mostly because of Trump’s sinking polls in his matchup against Clinton.
