Gagai fit for State of Origin Game Two
FORMER fiery forward Steve “Blocker” Roach has urged New South Wales’ giant forwards to use their physicality and aggression to batter Queensland into submission in tonight’s State of Origin clash at Suncorp Stadium.
It could be one of Origin’s dirtiest tricks or simply Kevin Walters living up to his nice-guy persona but the Maroons coach has used his Origin eve press conference to proclaim rookie fullback Matt Moylan as the danger man for New South Wales.
He said they already had enough motivation to seal a 10th series win in 11 years in game two.
Daley said he would be “disappointed” if Queensland and in particular GI did not target inexperienced 21-year-old centre Dylan Walker, who faces a massive task against Origin’s all-time leading try-scorer with only nine minutes of Origin exposure in Sydney.
“It was in the back of my mind whether I was going to be right to play or not but due to the physios looking after me and all the treatment and strength work I’m back to feeling 100 per cent”.
“I’m just excited for Wednesday and to get out there to do a good job for Queensland”, he said. “This is a very talented squad and who knows what they are capable of”, Daley said.
“Being Dylan’s first Origin match here at Suncorp we’re going to make it as uncomfortable for him as we can”, said Walters.
“I think it was being the first game, each testing each other out – in game two both teams are more comfortable”.
“It’s a job that I love and enjoy”.
“If I lose a game of football, it’s not the worst thing that’s going to happen to me”.
In his second series in charge of the Blues in 2014, Daley helped snap an eight-year winning streak by the Maroons, only to be dethroned by Queensland last year.
“If you look through Origin history, NSW haven’t put together scorelines on Queensland”.
“You’ve got to score more points than the opposition”, he said.
“Our forwards got under their skin a bit in that game and we need to employ those tactics again”, snarled Roach. “We were criticised for our attack [in game one], but we scored the same amount of tries as Queensland and they’re a great team”, he added.
Gallen will break the record in game three, in a match he hopes won’t be a dead rubber.
“All I’m anxious about is trying to get this team to win game two”, Daley said on Tuesday. That’s the role of those (Reynolds and James Maloney), to make sure they manage the game.
“I really felt for him and I didn’t want to show too much emotion about it”.
