Game Of The Year: Kansas vs
As soon as the final buzzer sounded, the comparisons to some of the college basketball’s best games began. While the Buddy Hield is great vs. all the retirement home Kansas players being awesome spectacle should be remembered, many of us are living in the moment.
The scene was already set for an epic matchup when Kansas and Oklahoma were ranked first and second, respectively, in Monday’s afternoon’s new Associated Press poll. “There were so many plays going both ways”. “We just came up a little short”.
The Jayhawks (13-1, 2-0) needed 27 points from Perry Ellis, 21 from Wayne Selden and 20 from Devonte Graham to get the win.
Oklahoma senior Buddy Hield, who played at Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, scored 46 points. “Just proud of my teammates, never giving up”.
Sure, he got plenty of help from Woodard (27 points) and Spangler (14 points, 18 boards).
After the Sooners called a timeout, Hield threw the ball away on the ensuing inbounds pass, and Mason added two more free throws with 8.6 seconds left for the final margin. Mason added two more with 9 seconds left.
With the game tied at 77 in the final seconds, Kansas missed a shot and OU’s Khadeem Lattin was fouled on the rebound with just two seconds left.
There was not much Kansas could do to stop him at the rim… But here’s a look at the ones that won the game in the third OT.
The home team came roaring back to jump out to a 102-98 lead, though, thanks to four made free throws; Hield wasn’t about to let that stand, though, as he hit a huge three to trim the lead back to one. We finally hunkered down and got some stops in the second half.
“When Forte went out, it changed things and it took them some time to adapt”, Drew said. They are led by an enviable three-headed guard rotation of Mason III, Selden Jr. and Graham, and senior forward Perry Ellis is a sleeper player of the year candidate. The Sooners trailed 32-21 in the first half. Hield shot on 13-of-23 from the floor, 8-of-15 from three and 12-of-14 shooting from the foul line. Oklahoma led for the majority of the half but fell behind late.
Self said, “both teams were exhausted”.
Tickets for other games remain, though, including a three-game pack that includes tickets to see the Sooners play Texas (Feb. 8), Oklahoma State (Feb. 24) and Baylor (March 1) for $65 per seat. “It was terrific, a grind both ways”. Kansas was ranked No. 2 when it lost in the NCAA Tournament to No. 1 teams – Duke in the 1986 national semifinals and North Carolina in the 1957 national championship game. Hield hit another 3 to pull Oklahoma back from the brink in the third overtime. OU made a trio of 3-pointers during a 47-second span in the waning moments of the first half to erase the Jayhawks’ largest lead of the game – 11 points at 5:51 mark. Mason finished with 15 points and six assists…. That clash, between Ohio State and Wisconsin, was nothing compared to the show the Sooners and Jayhawks put on.
Paige led six players scoring in double figures for the Mountaineers (13-1, 2-0 Big 12). The Sooners rolled into Kansas for ESPN’s first “Big Monday” game of the season undefeated, setting up a showdown between the Nos.
