‘Game Of Thrones’ Finale Sunday Caps A Season Of Satisfaction
When you play a role on Game of Thrones, dying is, as Natalie Dormer correctly asserts, “an occupational hazard!” After a brief interlude with some White Walkers, viewers were introduced to the Starks at Winterfell.
So what did you think about Margaery’s death in the Season 6 finale? Much to Margery’s protest that they should evacuate, sensing something was off, they soon went up in flames.
The second, and more important, turning point is that Cersei loses her nephew-child Tommen, and with him any semblance of humanity. The good news is Robb seems as if he might be able to avenge his father’s death after being proclaimed King in the North.
And while Cersei should have been mourning the loss of her last son, the last child that tied her and Jaime together, she was instead gleeful at the realization that she now commanded total power in King’s Landing. He walks through a narrow hall lined with bookshelves before finding the incredible heart of the Seven Kingdoms’ center of knowledge and learning. But Stannis had been just as firm shooting down Operation Torch Shireen last season – and look how that worked out for his daughter.
Jon then meets with Sansa. “The reason it all goes tits up is because Margaery wasn’t in control of the battle against Cersei”, she confessed. A powerful King in the North is no help to his hopes to be king of the Seven Kingdoms.
But is he a Stark? It’s a big moment for fans but the episode coasts a little off it, stopping just short of making Jon’s parentage explicit. When the queen asks Stannis why he thinks highly of Jon since he’s “the bastard of a tavern slut”, Stannis slyly remarks, “Perhaps, but that wasn’t Ned Stark’s way”. They were like, ‘We weren’t going to tell you this for a few more months, but we’re not going to release you now, so you can’t do that job you really want to do and we’re really sorry about that. Thus concluding that Rhaeger is Jon’s father and Daenerys is his aunt. She knows she can do rule better than anybody else. Or is Bran going to be keeping this information to himself?
Bran places his hand on the tree and wargs back to the tower, where he saw a young Ned Stark before.
Apparently, Dormer also wasn’t surprised to learn of her own character’s death. She pulls an Eric Cartman and makes him eat his sons, shows him her real face…the one that belongs to Arya Stark.
Back at Winterfell, Baelish approaches Sansa, revealing that she was the impetus for numerous decisions he’s made over the years.
Daenerys was finishing off final arrangements to make her move and start sailing to Westeros.
It’s fitting that all this happens in the same episode where Dany says goodbye to her Bae of Dragons, Daario. She has her fleet of ships. Tyrion tries to console her, telling the Mother of Dragons that she’s finally ready to take Westeros and is part of the “great game” now. “I knew when I started shooting season 6 that it would be my last”.
Upon Jamie’s arrival back in Kind’s Landing, he discovers the destroyed sept – oh, and that Cersei has taken the Iron Throne for herself.
