Game of Thrones is king of the Emmy nominations list
In this image released by HBO Kerry Washington appears in a scene from, “Confirmation”.
Two-time Oscar victor Jane Fonda certainly isn’t short of awards glory, but she has every right to feel slightly miffed at being ignored yet again in the Lead Actress in a Comedy category, while her Grace and Frankie co-star Lily Tomlin picks up her second consecutive nomination.
Game of Thrones has earned the most nominations for this year’s Emmys, as a host of British talent will compete for awards on USA television’s biggest night. Sterling K. Brown, David Schwimmer, and John Travolta all received nominations for best supporting actor in a limited series or movie. “Saturday Night Live” raises its all-time Emmy nomination record to 218 – the most of any program in the history of TV. Spy drama The Americans received nominations for five award categories which, according to critics and experts were overdue and the nominations includes best actor for Mathew Rhys, Keri Russell for best actress, outstanding drama series and the best writing award for their season’s final show.
Others included both Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright for “House of Cards”; Kyle Chandler for the drama “Bloodline”; Rami Malek for “Mr Robot”; Lily Tomlin for “Grace and Frankie” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” star Ellie Kemper.
The contenders for best actor in a comedy series are “Transparent” actor Jeffrey Tambor, “Silicon Valley” actor Thomas Middleditch, “Shameless” actor William H. Macy, “Last Man on Earth” actor Will Forte, “Master of None” actor Aziz Ansari, and “Black-ish” actor Anthony Anderson.
Hiddleston is nominated for his role in the BBC’s The Night Manager. And ABC’s breakthrough hit Black-ish also made a strong showing, reaping a repeat nomination for Anthony Anderson and breaking into the Best Comedy and Actress categories (big up Tracee Ellis Ross!).
In the acting categories, previous nominees Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and Emilia Clarke were joined by first-timers Maisie Williams, Kit Harington, as well as the legendary Max von Sydow in the Guest Role category for his work as the Three-Eyed Raven.
A top acting nod for “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays a US vice-president now elevated to the Oval Office, gives her the chance to score her fifth consecutive win and set a record.
“Game of Thrones”, which won a record-breaking 12 awards in 2015, delivered nearly a quarter of network HBO’s 94 nods.
This year’s Emmy winners will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on September 18. Turns out, it was a timing issue: The cutoff for nominees for this year was in May; the doc aired in June. I am so happy to be part of this cast and honored to be nominated with such an outstanding group of people and many of my friends.
