“Game of Thrones” leads 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards noms
When a Web series released exclusively on YouTube nabs an Emmy nomination, as “Her Story” did on Thursday, the rise of digital and streaming platforms can not be ignored. Even though that’s 32 fewer than it earned a year ago, it still is a dominant performance, as “Game of Thrones” earned 23 total nods, the most of any program on TV.
Game of Thrones will compete in a seven-way race for best drama with Showtime’s Central Intelligence Agency thriller Homeland, FX’s Cold War espionage saga The Americans, AMC’s quirky legal story Better Call Saul, the final season of PBS’s period melodrama Downton Abbey, Netflix’s political mystery House of Cards, and USA Network’s new computer-hacking tale Mr. Robot.
Regina King, who won last year for supporting actress in a limited series for “American Crime”, was nominated again in the same category for playing a different character in this year’s installment.
The Night Manager has done particularly well, securing 12 nominations, including best limited series.
The nominees for best comedy series are: “black-ish”; “Master Of None”; “Modern Family”; “Silicon Valley”; “Transparent”; “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”; “Veep”.
FX s hotly-tipped “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” scored the second highest tally with 22 nods, followed by “Fargo” with 18.
Indian-origin actor Aziz Ansari has bagged his maiden Emmy nomination for lead actor in a comedy category for Master of None. The comedy’s 17 noms include best comedy series, a lead actress in a comedy nomination for Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and supporting actor noms for Tony Hale, Matt Walsh, Anna Chumsky. TBS’ Samantha Bee didn’t translate her critical plaudits to a nomination. (The series and several of its stars won nominations this year as well.) That same year, the Web series “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” also won an Emmy for creative achievement in interactive media, the first time a YouTube series won that kind of traditional accolade. Supporting bids were given to Sterling K. Brown as prosecutor Christopher Darden, David Schwimmer as Simpson friend Robert Kardashian patriarch of the now-famous family and John Travolta as defense attorney Robert Shapiro. However, Hulu managed to gain only two nominations in a year when it announced plans to boost its original programming output.
The Idris Elba detective show and Sherlock’s Christmas special – The Abominable Bride – have both been nominated for outstanding television movie.
She then explained she was on the phone with her mother when she saw the news. “I could not be more humbled”.
The 68th Annual Emmy Awards will air September 18 on ABC and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
