‘Game Of Thrones’ Likely To Last Eight Seasons, Prequel Series Possible
Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming, said at the Television Critics Association press event today that the oft-quoted “seven seasons” plan for Game of Thrones is now out the window.
Lombardo was responding to a question over whether HBO’s attitude was going to be “seven seasons and out”. “Obviously we’re shooting six now, hopefully discussing seven”. But, he hopes that they changes their minds for the huge GoT fan base. “We’ll have an honest conversation that explores all possible avenues…”
Considering Game of Thrones is the most successful show in HBO history, it’s not much of a surprise they want to keep it around in some form or fashion.
Lombardo indicated that Benioff and Weiss have indicated to him that “there’s two more years after six”. “From everything I’ve seen, heard, read, Jon Snow is indeed dead”, he said.
When do you think is the right time to end “Game of Thrones?”
For five years, the world has been enthralled by the HBO drama Game of Thrones, a show that has never been afraid to introduce is to characters we fall in love with and then violently rip them away from us.
And while most of the fans of the series would love for the show to extend past season 7 or 8, there is one big question that they are eager to have answered: Is Kit Harington’s Jon Snow really dead?
“Dead is dead is dead”, Lombardo said, which is kind of starting to feel like a company line at this point. He also said he’d be in favour of even more than that (who wouldn’t?), including a prequel, believing that there’s “enormous story material” to be explored to put such a project together.
The Guardian reported that although the show faced a lot of controversy because its violence, Lombardo said that he supports the whole team “fully artistically”.
“[Game of Thrones] went to 20 million viewers this year, it went up over 1 million viewers from the prior season“, he added. I think it continues to grow dramatically. Maybe instead everyone should be asking if Jon Snow will actually stay dead.
