Game Recap: Blues Ride Newbies to Win Over Flames
The Blues head into Alberta looking to get back in the win column after a loss their last time out but they will be in tough against a Flames team who has high hopes for this season thanks to the emergence of their young core. Parayko is an Alberta native so it was big thrill for Parayko to get his first goals with his family and friends in the stands.
Much like his first goal, the stutter step he uses froze the defense and Hiller which allowed his wicked wrist shot to elude everyone.
The Flames, who beat the Canucks in six games in the first round of last season’s playoffs, opened the scoring exactly five minutes into the first period on the power play. Left winger Mason Raymond, center Jiri Hudler and right winger David Jones all scored for the Flames (1-2-0), while defenseman Dennis Wideman and right winger Michael Frolik chipped in with two assists each.
But that wasn’t enough for the rookie, not only did he play a sound defensive game mixed with a few nice body checks, he also got his second career goal near the end of the period.
Calgary goaltender Jonas Hiller started each game against St. Louis last season and allowed 10 of the 12 goals with the other two coming on empty nets.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound defenseman has been described as a skyscraper himself, but as evidenced in the Blues’ 4-3 win over the Flames later that night, there’s more to the rookie than meets the eye.
The Blues would tap into it after a penalty-riddled first period that gave Calgary four power plays. With just 31.5 seconds remaining before the second intermission, another point shot by Parayko found its way past Hiller and into the net to put the Blues up 4-2.
St. Louis Blues’ Ryan Reaves, left, checks Calgary Flames’ Lance… “I tried to pull it and there was no shot lane, so I just moved to the forehand and wristed one through”.
St. Louis Blues’ goalie Brian Elliott, left, blocks a shot from… “It’s something that’s key to his game, and getting two tonight was awesome for him”.
Colton Parayko will never forget Tuesday night.
