Garbine Muguruza qualifies for 2015 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented
Garbine Muguruza won the biggest title of her career on Sunday, taking down Timea Bacsinszky for the China Open title.
“Well, definitely it’s a big achievement”, she said following her victory over Timea Bacsinszky in Beijing.
The Spanish fifth seed, the 2015 Wimbledon finalist, struggled to impose herself upon her 12th-seeded Swiss opponent in the opening set where there were seven breaks of serve.
“But I earned my place, so that means that I can hopefully hold the trophy”.
“I just tried to focus on my game plan and not look further – I was only thinking about the next ball, the next point, not what was going to happen after that”, Bacsinszky said in her on-court interview after the match. “Thank you for every day”.
The smash turned out to fire up Muguruza who was down 5-1 at the time in the first set.
Coming into this event, Bacsinszky had lost her last five matches since Wimbledon and looked likely to lose a sixth straight when she trailed Camila Giorgi 16 24.
Garbine Muguruza enjoyed being at the top of tennis for the week winning the China Open Sunday.
The 22-year-old Muguruza, who achieved her career-best ranking of No. 5 last week, overcame a rusty start to pull off a three-set battle in an hour and 22 minutes. She had also played well here in the past, losing in the quarter finals back in 2010 to the former top twenty player, Shahar Peer.
Tied 4-4 in the second set, Muguruza broke the ninth game and kept serve in the 10th to claim her second career title.
Now the new world no. 4 Muguruza has followed suit, citing a troublesome ankle that requires rest before the WTA Finals begin in Singapore in less than a fortnight’s time.
Considering Muguruza’s solid form for the past few weeks, the head to head and their respective playing styles, I predict Muguruza will finally win a Premier level title.
