Garbine Muguruza Wins French Open By Defeating Serena Williams
In 2014, Muguruza knocked off Williams in the second round.
Yes, she has won only one of those four finals and lost three.
In the two previous rounds, Williams looked sluggish, especially in her movement on court, and she acknowledged playing with a strained adductor muscle in her upper leg.
Williams beat Muguruza in straight sets at last year’s Wimbledon to win her 21st major title. “You can do it, ‘” Muguruza said. “Women’s tennis has been looking for this lady”.
“Serena reigned for long time and now it is over to Garbine Muguruza”.
“I’m so, so excited”, Muguruza said on court. “She fits the role on and off the court”. In the final, Muguruza matched Serena for pace and power, but her strongest weapon was her ability to change the direction of the ball at will.
The champion was broken in the first game by her unseeded opponent who, entering the contest on a 12-match winning singles streak in all competitions, showed no sign of nerves in her first major semi-final.
“I’m very happy, but I’d like to have more”, she said. You media, you call it, you say this one should be the next one, but until it’s done, it’s complicated. Yes, she has never lost two consecutive grand slams finals in her career. “We can move on”.
That defeat, and the following loss to Angelique Kerber in the Australian Open final, have, of course, increased the pressure on Williams as she chases No 22, and pressure can do odd things.
Her team and even her rivals insist that the American, despite being in her third decade on tour, is not finished as a force in the game. But now, she has finally figured a way out to control those emotions and let her tennis do the talking. “Sometimes it’s not a good thing to think about”. I won?’ It was, like, amazing. “I grew up on clay so for Spain and me this is just unbelievable”.
She was forced into many errors.
She realized after her Wimbledon final run that she would be one of “the hunted”, but said Saturday that’s what she prefers. “It’s normal, you can not play a Grand Slam final for history the same way as any other”. I want to thank my group, my family. On being made to visualize his player lifting her level as she beats Garbine, he had to chuckle as he spoke. The mental approach Saturday was point by point, shot by shot.
So the wait continues for Serena’s coronation as the greatest tennis player of the Open-era.
“In moments where some other players could be tense, she goes for it. Serena does that too and that’s what she needs to do. That’s what you need to do”.
And now the rest of the world knows her.
As Mouratoglou said, there are more chances for Williams to get to 22 and perhaps beyond. It’s not about just winning this tournament. By digging up a little bit more through stats and numbers, another interesting fact occurs.
“But how can you ask for a better ending?”
With this win, four different women have won the last four slams.
