Garcia takes one-stroke lead
Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the BMW Masters after a sparkling six-under-par 66 in Shanghai on Saturday, overhauling overnight leader Lucas Bjerregaard.
Denmark’s Lucas Bjerregaard, who led by three at the halfway stage as he seeks a maiden European Tour title, had a two-under 70 and is tied for second with Sergio Garcia and Byeong Hun An.
With the top 60 after this week qualifying for next week’s DP World Tour Championship, Dubai – Bjerregaard will likely now have more lofty ambitions than getting to the season finale.
“It was nice in Hong Kong to prove to myself and to everyone else that I can still compete up there”, the 24-year-old said.
Bjerregaard’s six-under-par 66 included seven birdies and one bogey.
Paul Casey, who eagled the par-4 14th hole, Thongchai Jaidee, and Justin Rose were three strokes behind Garcia at 5 under, and a group of nine players was another shot back at 4 under, including Henrik Stenson, Ian Poulter, and 18-year-old Dou Zecheng of China.
Garcia, who was fortunate to get a good lie in heavy rough after a wild tee shot on the 14th, added: ” I knew that I was falling behind and I was hoping for something good to happen.
With just a single birdie on the front nine on the third day, Wilkinson went for a more aggressive approach on his way back into the clubhouse, but three birdies on the 11th, 13th and 17th were neutralised by bogeys on the 12th and 18th. “If I play well like this, keep performing like this, I’m going to have a good chance”.
“I played OK today”, said Rose, who is seeking a double on Chinese soil having won in his last outing at the Hong Kong Open last month. Kristoffer Broberg almost matched Pieters after an eagle three at the seventh ignited a sparkling run of 10 holes played in nine-under par. The 2014 Cadillac Championship victor has five top-10 finishes in his last seven tournaments, but hasn’t come up with a trophy. “A few weeks ago, I was just like, ‘I’ll never win here.’ I was just so down”, said the Swede, who shot a 68 on Sunday.
