Gareth Southgate had psychological assessment before taking England job
Newly appointed England manager, Gareth South-gate has confirmed Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney will remain captain of the Three Lions.
The issue dominated a news conference to present Gareth Southgate as the coach of England’s national team. The governing body is also funding and supporting a hotline, set up by a children’s charity in response to sex abuse claims, that has taken more than 860 calls in its first week.
Southgate put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal on Wednesday after showing enough promise from the four games he was placed in temporary charge for.
“Where I will be clear is that there is a level of expectation when you are with England”.
“It is important as a playing squad and group of staff recognise that”.
“He’s got good knowledge but the fact he has been a player and been at that level will help the national team massively”.
Southgate said: “Ultimately you want to go to win, but we are recognising now the landscape of what we are dealing with and the starting point”.
Should England qualify for the World Cup in Russian Federation in 2018, it would come 12 months on from the European Under-21 Championship. What have you learnt?’ And there was some pretty feisty opinions from the more technical (football) people in the room about some things.
“Everything has to be geared towards being successful”.
“I think we’ll do well in Russian Federation, personally, but in the hypothetical event we didn’t there’s a longer-term project and I think we need to support Gareth, to build towards 2020 and hopefully beyond”.
Southgate was unveiled at Wembley yesterday after landing the England job on a permanent basis following his unbeaten stint in interim charge.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with the players over these past four games and I think there’s huge potential”.
Speaking soon after his appointment as England manager, Southgate said: “I played with one of the players who has recently come forward. Wayne has played an important part and can do so in the future, but we have to develop others”. The scars from Euro 2016 are yet to fully heal, and their chosen successor – Sam Allardyce – has been cast out in semi-hilarious, semi-embarrassing circumstances.
The 31-year-old intends to call time on his England career after the 2018 World Cup, ahead of which Southgate confirmed the forward will retrain the captain’s armband.
“When I took over, I changed a lot of things about the way we trained and prepared”, he said. “For me, the hard work starts now”. But maybe, collectively, a bit of humility won’t be a bad thing: to admit this is where we’re at, but let’s look and see what is achievable and go for it. There needs to be trust between the coach and the players.
Holland also combined his Chelsea job with being England first-team coach when Southgate was interim boss of the senior side.
In a Q&A session on England’s official Twitter account, Southgate said: “Certainly I think we have a lot of players like Lallana who at their clubs press extremely well”.
“Yes, Gareth Southgate is the right man for the job”, he said last month.
