Garry Monk: Newcastle targeted Jefferson Montero
“I think we’ve just got to learn to be a little bit smarter in our play”. “We got that. It was excellent”, said Monk.
The Dutch defender was booked for his second foul on Montero after 17 minutes and, after nearly bringing him down again inside the penalty area, he was banished for tugging back the Ecuadorian winger deep inside Swansea’s own half.
Steve McClaren rejected Swansea boss Garry Monk’s accusation that Newcastle tried to stop Jefferson Montero with a tactic to “basically try and kick him”.
Former Sunderland and West Ham United midfielder Don Hutchison has taken to social networking site Twitter to give his reaction to the sending-off of Daryl Janmaat against Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.
Monk said in the build up to the game that Montero is the best one-on-one attacker in the Premier League and Taylor added: “Jeff is a nightmare to play against. From then on it’s very hard”.
After the break Montero, who also hit a post, crossed for new signing Andre Ayew to head in his second goal following his Bosman move from Marseille.
Ayew and Bafetimbi Gomis scored the goals, as they did against Chelsea, and such are Monk’s options when it comes to attackers that Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer were introduced off the bench in the second half.
“I knew he (Gomis) would score goals but he is contributing well all over the pitch too”.
“The Swans continue to do a terrific job in putting the city on the map across the world, so we’ll continue to do all we can to make the most of the exposure they generate”, said Mr Francis-Davies.
“I talked to the players all week about good teams backing up good performances with another”. But I don’t think you can judge us until we are 12 games in.
Monk was delighted that his side has garnered four points from two games but was less than happy with the treatment that Montero received and the challenge from substitute Aleksander Mitrovic on Neil Taylor late on.
“We’ve learned nothing today apart from we need to keep 11 players on the field”.
Now Newcastle have the tough task of trying to find a first win in three Premier League games when they head for Manchester United this Saturday, without the suspended Janmaat.
“Then we lost Moussa Sissoko as well with a groin problem, so we had a mountain to climb”. The first match against Southampton I thought had shown us what Newcastle United was capable of, but instead, all we saw was a club that couldn’t seem to pace themselves against a well organized team.
