Gary Kubiak’s simple reason for wild OT call in Broncos loss
Do you know what that means?
Last night, Sunday Night Football treated us to an exciting one between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos.
KUBIAK’S TOUGH NIGHT: Not only did he pick what turned out to be the wrong move punt, go for it or try the field goal on fourth-and-10 from the Chiefs 34 with just over a minute remaining but Broncos coach Gary Kubiak also got whistled for getting in the way of an official running down the sideline.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill became the first player to score a rushing, receiving and kick-return touchdown in the same game since Gale Sayers in 1965, per ESPN Stats & Info. Even his teammates hesitated as they ran out to celebrate, unsure if the ball had clanked through or not. He recovered the loose ball at the Denver 5-yard line. The Denver offense got bogged down time and time again with a lack of a consistent short-yardage offense, and Ty Sambrailo was manhandled on almost every play by Justin Houston, who totaled three sacks in the first half alone. One reason may be the improving entertainment factor as the season began with a series of one-sided blowouts but has since evened out a bit. “When it’s crunch time at the end of a game, big plays need to be made”. It just wins, often in head-scratching fashion, like on Sunday night.
“No doubt it’s a coming out party – on Sunday Night Football and it’s definitely fun because the whole country is watching”, Hill said.
Alex Smith will get credit for the K.C. comeback just by virtue of being the quarterback, but it was Hill’s skill and Justin Houston’s defensive dominance that propelled the Chiefs to victory more than anything. On another clutch play, Siemian connected with Derby on a third down and Denver had the ball at the Kansas City 44. The game marked Winchester’s second game back following the tragic shooting death of his father Michael Winchester on November 15.
Then, Tyreek Hillran back the kickoff (punt off?) after the safety, and Cairo Santos booted through the extra point to give Kansas City a 9-0 lead and the game some life.
“He’s really going through grieving with his dad and he’s a top-notch kid”, Reid said.
But if you didn’t give up and go to bed, you got to see things turn weird. “It was just one that got away from us”.
Special teams produced all of the punctuation marks for both team’s drives in overtime. 16 to Kelce. Santos makes the field goal.
A punt would have made for a likely tie, and a 62-yard field goal by a kicker (Brandon McManus) with range would win it. Especially in a game like this, where in the first half, field position was so important, and for him to be able to get the return score. was big.
I still think an 18 week schedule with 2 bye weeks is the best option for the NFL.
McManus missed and the Chiefs took over from the Denver 48 with 1:03 left and 1 time out. “That’s why I made that decision”.
Smith drove the Chiefs 32 yards to the Broncos 16-yard line. “We did overcome adversity, not just lifetime adversity but game adversity”.
The loss put the Broncos at 7-4, third place in their division and put them out of a playoff berth.
The game turned into the white knuckler the National Football League expected when it flexed the AFC West showdown to Sunday night rather than having the Patriots-Jets game in prime time as originally scheduled.
A mere 45 years after the regrettable Lou Saban era, the late Denver Broncos coach was finally justified with his infamous decision.
