Gary Neville presented as new Valencia first team coach
Neville replaces Nuno Espirito Santo, who resigned after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Sevilla, a result that left Los Che ninth in the Spanish league.
Carragher also praises Neville for the bold move to Valencia, claiming that his refusal to take an easier move is typical of him.
The 40-year-old former Manchester United and England defender said he would have lost credibility in the game had he rejected the chance to manage the Primera Division giants after being unveiled to the press.
Neville said he was “absolutely thrilled” about his Valencia appointment. Valencia are a huge football club of vast standing and I know from my time as a player the passion and dedication of the Valencia fans.
Valencia caretaker manager Voro is hoping that Gary Neville brings the same character and determination he showed as a player to his coaching style at the Mestalla.
Speaking to the assembled media on Thursday, Neville, who will have his brother Phil working as his assistant in Spain, has confirmed that he is moving his family to the region.
‘Gary is a football man, but I’ve been so impressed by him that he has been a success at whatever he has turned his hand to, ‘ Ferguson said.
Valencia is owned by Singaporean Peter Lim who also has a stake in English non-league side Salford City, co-owned by the Neville brothers as well as his “class of 92” teammates Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.
“I would question it and I would be sceptical and want to be proven otherwise”, he added. “I played here a few times against some fantastic Valencia wingers”.
“Roy was incredibly supportive, positive and enthusiastic for me”, he said. “We collectively got our act together and have improved greatly”.
“Obviously I have a lot of interests but they are parked”.
“Philip and Angulo, the under-19’s coach and a Valencia legend will form part of the coaching team, it certainly will not be a dictatorial approach”. “I understand I’ve got to prove to Valencia’s fans and the players that I can do the job”. “I have to provide the answers on the football pitch”.
“I don’t see any problems with that: if Phil wasn’t here, I’d want him here”.
It is one that he will combine with the England national team but Neville did not see that as problematic, either for club or country. “Every decision I make over these next six months will not be a short-term decision”.
Valencia play Barcelona at home on Saturday but Neville will not take charge of the team until after that match, explaining that he wanted the team’s preparations for facing the European champions to be “consistent” throughout the week.
