Geno Smith Breaks Jaw in Locker Room Brawl; Out 6-10 Weeks
Bowles announced the incident and Smith’s injury during a press conference with the media following Tuesday morning’s practice session. According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the dispute started when Enemkpali offered Smith a $600 plane ticket to a football camp in Pflugerville, Texas in July.
“It was something very childish”, Bowles said before Tuesday’s practice. Something very childish. He got cold cocked, sucker punched whatever you want to call it, in the jaw.
The punching incident, which will sideline Smith for six to 10 weeks, occurred at the Jets’ training facility in Florham Park.
“Depending on how the surgery goes, we’ll see where we go from there”, Bowles said.
The real story behind Geno Smith’s broken jaw was reportedly revealed. However, in the last few games of the 2014 season, he showed some progress.
And in Tuesday after, same day the altercation happened, Enemkpali immediately released a statement saying he was sorry for what had happened. The team also drafted Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty in the fourth round of this year’s draft. It has yet to be confirmed whether Smith notified Enemkpali about the last minute change of plans, but Enemkpali demanded that he be reimbursed by Smith the $600 when they got to camp. Enemkpali punched an off-duty undercover officer, who was working security at a Ruston, La., restaurant/bar, during an altercation.
What precipitated the ambush punch by reserve linebacker IK Enemkpali? “Leading your team. I’m not going to let anyone dictate how I play”. “I appreciate that opportunity I had with the Jets”.
The Jets’ depth chart includes veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, who played for offensive coordinator Chan Gailey with the Buffalo Bills.
Smith posted an all caps message to Instagram, proclaiming, “ILL BE BACK”.
New York still has a formidable linebacker corps, featuring Quinton Coples, Jason Babin, Calvin Pace and rookie Lorenzo Mauldin on the outside, which means the loss of Enemkpali will primarily be felt on special teams.
