Geno Smith no longer the starter in New York
“Ryan’s our starting quarterback right now”, Bowles said in a conference cal with reporters Tuesday afternoon, one day after their 20-7 dismantling of the Colts on “Monday Night Football”. We have good chemistry and everything else.
But, again, Bowles said: “Ryan will get all the first-team reps”.
Smith suffered the broken jaw when teammate IK Enemkpali punched him last month during a disagreement.
With Fitzpatrick as the starter, the Jets are off to a 2-0 start.
Since being drafted in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of West Virginia, Smith had started 29 of the Jets’ 32 games in the past two season prior to this year, but he had struggled mightily, throwing 34 interceptions against just 25 touchdown passes with an overall quarterback rating of 71.5.
Fitzpatrick’s detractors will point to his 35-55-1 record as a starting quarterback, but he has been on some bad teams. The Jets’ offense is actually producing touchdowns and capitalizing on the turnovers created by all the great takeaways on defense. He is not flashy, but does just enough to complement the ferocious Jets defense.
After today’s news, not only has Smith lost his job in New York, he may be hard-pressed to become a starter with another team in the future.
Smith has shown bits and pieces of being able to get the job done but the line he crossed by getting himself involved with such a silly altercation over money when it could have easily been avoided is no doubt going to be remembered all season long by those that run the team. After Monday night’s win, Smith was cheering loudly and smiling broadly has he made his way to the Jets locker room, as fired up as anyone about the win.
Ryan Fitzpatrick has played well enough to earn the starting job in New York. Everything is clicking with Fitzpatrick and it’s won the Jets two games in convincing fashion.
Something tells me that Smith’s tenure on the Jets might very well come to an end sooner than many think.
