George P. Bush: Jeb Bush Will ‘Pivot’ on Loaded Language

As immigration continues to dominate the Republican presidential race, both Donald Trump and Jeb Bush have been criticized for their use of the term “anchor babies“.

Trump, taking questions in New Hampshire, was scolded by a reporter for his use of the supposedly offensive term.

The 2015 “anchor baby” debate comments come after Trump promised to end “birthright” citizenship, which guarantees that any baby born on U.S. soil is an American citizen, regardless of the parents’ citizen status.

“I promise you, if I’m elected president of the United States, I will restore the traditional role of the United States as a leader for peace and security”, Bush declared at the annual summit of Americans for Prosperity. It’s hard to imagine that Bush ever saw himself as likely to attack another front-running candidate for being insufficiently conservative, as he unloaded on Trump on taxes, healthcare, abortion, and even past party affiliation on Thursday. So Bush and other candidates are courting their support.

Trump seized on the news on Friday, blasting his rival on Twitter. He’s previously talked about how his kids were taunted growing up because of the color of their skin, and Bush has used his life’s story as a way to try and connect with nontraditional Republican voters.

After recounting his record in Florida, Bush went for the applause lines.

“We should be a little more focused on solving the problems and talking about ideas that matter, rather than just kind of coming in like a tidal wave and saying things that are just outrageous and don’t make sense”, he said, noting that Trump’s immigration proposals were costly, not conservative, and not realistic.

“I’m going to tell you what I think is practical and what I think we can get done”, he said as he discussed immigration reform. Politics that Jeb Bush is “keeping his place and showing that he is different from the family name, that he has his own distinct record”.

Jeb Bush was the governor of the Florida at the time of his daughter’s incident, and she was thrust into the public spotlight.

When the reporter offered child of undocumented immigrant, Trump replied, “I’ll use the word anchor babies“. Trump mocked Bush for going “down like a rock” in early polls in the state and failing to excite his supporters. “Do you have a better term?” Calling someone an “anchor baby” strips away their humanity and judges them based on a perception of their parents’ immigration status. “The best way to shake those perceptions it to engage against the person who is in the media on a 24/7 loop”.

Trump is speaking at Ladds-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama tonight and city officials are expecting a turnout of some 35,000 people. “Don’t use the term “anchor baby”. “Now he wants to use it because I use it. Stay true to yourself!” “I think what you’ll find is you’ll have forgotten what exists in August, whatever it is – 20th”.
