Georgia hires Jim Chaney as offensive coordinator
Chaney is set to become UGA’s offensive coordinator under first-year Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart, sources close to the situation confirmed to DawgNation. Pittman is regarded as one of the nation’s top offensive line coaches and has been with Bret Bielema at Arkansas since 2013.
Chaney, a Missouri native, spent this past season in the same job at Pittsburgh. Georgia held its annual yearly team banquet Saturday night in Athens, with former head coach Mark Richt receiving a standing ovation.
As far as a permanent replacement for Chaney, no time line was given for a hire.
It seems that Smart was methodical in bringing Jim Chaney back to the SEC.
“On behalf of our entire program, I would like to thank Jim for his contributions to Pitt”, Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi said in a release. “His hard work was very important as we established our program in this first year”. He has also served as offensive coordinator as Tennessee (2009-12), Purdue (1997-2005), and Cal State Fullerton (1988-92).
Georgia also announced the additions of Sam Pittman from Arkansas as offensive line coach and Alabama’s Glen Schumann as a defensive assistant.
Under his watch, the Panthers’ offense averaged 28.3 points per game, 70th in Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and 10th in the ACC. The Panthers’ 5.3 yards per play ranked 73rd in FBS. He has been in charge of a unit that has allowed the fewest sacks in the SEC for four straight seasons.
Schumann was Alabama’s director of player personnel and defensive analyst, where he worked with Smart, who was the Crimson Tide’s defensive coordinator.
