Georgia, Mark Richt half methods after 15 seasons
So don’t weep for Les Miles twisting in the wind until Saturday night or Richt getting fired Sunday morning or Saban questioning the profession twice in two days.
Athletic director Greg McGarity introduced Sunday that the college and Richt had mutually agreed to half methods.
Richt was contacted by “about five” different schools since news of his exit at Georgia was official. “I have no reason to believe that anybody isn’t totally focused because for us to play well at whatever they’re responsible for is certainly going to be helpful to any opportunities that they can create for themselves”. It was clear following the game Richt had no plans to step down.
It was that kind of day as teams searching for a new head football coach adjusted to a landscape that seemed to change by the hour.
McGarity said he will hire a search firm, that the search begins immediately and is “wide open”. “If he stays I know he’s going to be happy”, he said Monday. A smaller sign said “Fire McGarity”. He said he expects to have other chances to coach, especially since he will not be on the road recruiting as he had planned during the break before bowl practice.Ill have the opportunity to look at a lot of options, Richt said. “I wouldn’t swap it, men, because I watched you struggle and I watched you wrestle with them angels… but I watched you grow up and become men”.
Richt, one of the nation’s most respected college coaches, will leave the sidelines with memorable moments that fans will long remember including the “Hobnail Boot” win at Tennessee in 2001 and 4th-and-15 touchdown pass at Auburn in 2002 that led to Georgia winning its first SEC championship in 20 years. I was all for that. “I said, ‘Be patient”. “I think decisions of this nature are hard”. “Our fans are passionate, and Mark has tremendous support and a way of connecting with people. When we don’t make it to Atlanta, I’m miserable around here too”, said Richt.
The reaction in the room was silence, Gause said, and Barchi provided no other details about the Flood decision or what would happen to the assistant coaches. “Those things will really remain between Mark and myself”.
Speculations have emerged on the possibility that Kirby Smart, defensive coordinator of Alabama, may come in, but Georgia does not offer enough to attract now successful head coaches.
Also somewhat surprising also was Richt’s apparent interest in coaching again.
Keep up the good work and when you get in town, come by and see me. “It’s about being a good coach and being a good leader for your players”. If things don’t go the way people want them to go, I can understand them being disappointed. “I don’t have any question about that at all”. Bobo is the former Georgia quarterback and offensive coordinator. “Win the SEC and hopefully go beyond that”. In 15 seasons with the Bulldogs, Richt compiled a 145-51 (83-37 in the SEC) record with the Bulldogs and took them to a bowl game in each season he was in Athens.
Dye’s speech was real, raw and honest – and watching it play on Auburn’s new $13 million video board demonstrated how far this game has traveled, for better or worse.
