Georgia officer shot dead while responding to call
Officer Tim Smith encountered the individual in an Eastman neighbourhood, who exited his vehicle and fired his weapon, investigators said. He was shot as he exited his patrol auto, according to Georgia Bureau of Investigations spokesman Scott Dutton. “Officer Smith returned gunfire and the individual fled the scene”.
Two teenagers were arrested in connection with the shooting of a Marietta police officer early Sunday morning as the officer responded to a call about people breaking into cars outside an apartment complex on Franklin Road.
At around 9:30 p.m., Dodge County 911 received a call for a suspicious person near the intersection of Smith and Main Street in Eastman.
Smith was rushed to an area hospital where he died.
Deeds is accused of shooting and killing Eastman police officer Tim Smith on Saturday. He was not wearing a body camera at the time of the shooting.
Smith’s father, Lewis Smith, is employed with Glenwood police in Wheeler County, which is less than an hour from where the shooting took place, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that it will be leading the investigation into Smith’s death.
Wallace says the officers approached two suspects who were inside a vehicle. “Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the GBI office”, the statement said. Smith’s death comes just five weeks after a gunman killed five officers in Dallas in an ambush on July 7.
Whitley said that an extra 20 people from nearby agencies are working to find the suspect. Davis, a 10-year veteran, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and is recovering after surgery. Both the wounded officer and suspect are expected to survive, Marietta police said.
