Georgia police officer shot and wounded; 2 suspects caught
Authorities did not release the names, genders, or races of either the officer or the suspects.
One suspect was taken into custody at the scene and could be seen being put into a police vehicle by Chopper46. The officer is acutely aware & alert at a hospital, DeKalb County Public Safety Director Dr. Cedric Alexander told reporters.
Alexander said the vehicle ultimately crashed into a wall in front of a gas station.
The officer was later identified as 47-year-old Marco Vizcarrando.
He was treated and released from Grady Hospital late Friday.
A second suspect fled the scene, but was later caught in a wooded area by a police K9 unit. Both suspects face charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and felony obstruction.
Fore said neither suspect sustained a significant injury.
Police believe at least one of the men fired a fully automatic pistol at the officer, Alexander said.
The shootout happened less than 2 miles from DeKalb police headquarters. “The (officers) were taking deliberate shots, but we had bad guys who didn’t really care, they just fired at random”. He says two suspects exited the vehicle, ran across the parking lot and the officer chased them before gunshots were exchanged.
Police are still investigating the incident.
