Germaine Greer defends views on transgender issues amid calls for cancellation
The petition adds that while debate should be encouraged in universities, Greer’s “problematic” views of trans people, especially trans women were risky.
Dr Greer says that men who transition to womanhood – she had in mind Caitlyn Jenner, who was previously Bruce Jenner, who is Kim Kardashian’s stepfather – do not become women when they transition.
“Some people have decided that because I don’t think that post-operative transgender men are women, I’m not to be allowed to talk”, Dr Greer said.
But Greer, who has come under fire in the past for saying that transgender women seem like ghastly parodies and that a transgender woman was essentially “a man’s delusion that he is female”, says she would no longer attend, even if the petition failed.
Greer made the comments whilst discussing Jenner being tipped for Glamour magazine’s Woman of the Year award – which she blamed on “misogyny”.
“At Cardiff University we work hard to provide a positive and welcoming space for LGBT+ people”, he reacted, “and we are in consultation with student and staff groups to ensure that the views of LGBT+ people are represented at our events”.
“I think it’s a shame because she was such an icon of feminism for so many years.
I’m 76. I don’t want to go down there and be screamed at and have things thrown at me”, she told BBC News.
She also said that “a great many” women did not dare to say that transgender people “don’t look like, sound like, or behave like women”.
“I do not know why universities can not hear unpopular views and think about what they mean”.
“Greer has demonstrated time and time again her misogynistic views towards trans women, including continually misgendering trans women and denying the existence of transphobia altogether”, the petition states.
The lefty hero then alleged Jenner only ever wanted to be a woman so that he could revel in the attention before claiming his own right to speak on the matter of transgenderism. Allowing Greer a platform endorses her views, and by extension, the transmisogyny which she continues to perpetuate.
“I was going to talk about women and power, the lessons of the 20th century”, she said.
“People are hurtful to me all the time”, she said. “I’m not about to walk on eggshells”.
