But the FA board chose to stand by a July decision to unanimously support Platini in the presidential election.

The European soccer federation UEFA said Platini had met with investigators as a witness; but on Tuesday, Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber said Platini was considered as somewhere “between a witness and an accused person”.

Blatter, who has been associated with FIFA since 40 years, will be replaced as president when his successor is announced after the elections on February 26, 2016.

“Events of recent days have raised a number of issues which do need to be fully examined”. We are still of that view.

The February 26 election will take place in Zurich, and each of FIFA’s 209 national associations will have one vote.

FIFA’s accounts for 1999-2002 show a revenue surplus of 115 million Swiss francs (about $83 million in 2002) but a deficit of 134 million Swiss francs had been forecast.

But it stressed, “We are following the ongoing investigation initiated by the Swiss attorney general which Platini is co-operating with in full”.

He said he hoped that could lead to a new structure similar to “a German stock company with a professional executive and a board of directors” and including people from outside football.

FIFA’s ethics committee has banned Jack Warner from football-related activity for life following an investigation into the bidding contest for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

The UEFA president released a statement on Wednesday confirming he had “cooperated fully” after being asked to provide information. “He has not been accused of any wrongdoing”.
