German minister says given Britain a little time
May is expected to make more appointments Thursday after a raft of senior positions were announced in the hours after she formally accepted the task of forming a new government following a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II.
Mr Gove was sacked by the new Prime Minister on the second day of a round of appointments which has already seen fellow Brexiteer Boris Johnson – the man whose leadership plans he dashed – appointed Foreign Secretary.
The previous Treasury chief, George Osborne, departed Wednesday.
Philip Hammond, one of Prime Minister Theresa May’s first appointments, offered calming tones of reassurance to the markets and the general public in a series of interviews after taking office.
Liz Truss, the previous environment secretary, replaced Gove as justice secretary and Justine Greening, who had been the secretary for worldwide development, was named the new education secretary. She went on to study geography at St Hugh’s College in Oxford University and began her political career stuffing envelopes at her local Conservative Association before becoming a councillor in the London Borough of Merton from 1986 to 1994.
The quip was a reference to a comment by Obama during Britain’s European Union referendum campaign that the country would be at the back of the queue for trade deals if it voted to leave the bloc.
“Unfortunately, this carries on from what has been the starting point of this unfortunate referendum in the first place”, he said. She rewarded Johnson with the plum job of foreign secretary.
French Foreign Minister Ayrault was blunt: “I am not at all anxious about Boris Johnson, but… during the campaign he lied a lot to the British people and now it is he who has his back against the wall”.
Johnson is one of Britain’s most recognizable politicians with his blond mop-top hair, bumbling manner and tendency to drift into Latin during speeches. He is internationally famous but for rumpled eccentricity, Latin aphorisms and distinctly undiplomatic gaffes.
He described the United States president as “part-Kenyan” and therefore had an “ancestral dislike” of Britain.
Johnson himself said he was “humbled”.
Meanwhile, in her statement following the confirmation that she is to be the U.K.’s next prime minister, May insisted that “Brexit means Brexit and we’re going to make a success of it” and emphasized the country will “forge a bold, new, positive role for ourselves in the world”.
Many Brexit supporters appear to be among those who believe that they are victims, that things are changing in ways they don’t like and that they don’t have a say. But he is young – only 49 years old – and still has the potential for a lucrative career ahead of him. “There may be some mishaps”.

But her first choices for her close team sparked surprise, including former London mayor Johnson as Britain’s top diplomat and longtime eurosceptic David Davis in charge of the “exiting the European Union” portfolio.
May gave the farming ministry to Andrea Leadsom, another Brexit campaigner who had run against her for the Conservative party leadership. He will lead a new department charged with the complex work of divorcing Britain from the bloc yet forging a new relationship with it.
Oxford City Council leader Bob Price said Mr Javid’s previous role meant he was likely to “understand the importance” of the city’s role to the national economy and called on him to progress talks on devolution of major powers.
Britain’s new prime minister has curtsied to the Queen and wasted no time forming her cabinet.
“For example, whoever would like to have free access to the European internal market will also have to accept all basic freedoms in return, including the free movement of people”.
In his last parliamentary session as leader, Cameron took the opportunity to trumpet his government’s achievements in generating one of the fastest growth rates among western economies, chopping the budget deficit, creating 2.5 million jobs and legalizing gay marriage.
