German police in search for new suspect in deadly Christmas market attack
Twelve people were killed and 48 others were injured.
German media cited local security sources as saying that there was evidence suggesting the arrested suspect was from Afghanistan or Pakistan and had entered Germany as a refugee.
“The Metropolitan Police has detailed plans for protecting public events over the Christmas and New Year period”, the department said in a statement.
Thomas de Maizière, Germany’s interior minister, said: “It is important that we find this suspect, and that’s why it is important to carry out an undercover search”. He has denied any involvement in the attack.
Earlier Tuesday, the head of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police force said police have not yet found the gun believed to have been used to kill the truck’s Polish driver.
“If you see this person that we are seeking, inform the police”. And thus a new situation. “The true perpetrator is still armed, at large and can cause fresh damage”. A lorry driven by a man who had pledged allegiance to IS ploughed into crowds celebrating Bastille Day.
The information comes from identity papers allegedly found under a seat in the cab of the truck. The Polish owner of the truck said he feared the vehicle may have been hijacked.
The company’s transport manager, Lukasz Wasik, said the driver was 37 years old and had been transporting Thyssen steel products from Italy to Berlin.
The truck struck the market outside the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, near the Berlin Zoo train station. ISIS spokesperson Mohammed al-Adnani told supporters in 2014: “If you can’t detonate a bomb or fire a shot, manage by yourself. run them over with your vehicle”. The truck involved in the incident was stolen in Poland from a building site, the Berlin police tweeted.
