German shorthaired pointer CJ wins Westminster Dog Show
We’re assuming “being incredibly floppy” is not a trait Westminster Dog Show judges grade the dogs on, because if it was, one of these dogs would have surely won Best in Show.
A German Shorthaired Pointer named CJ bested more than 2,700 rivals to win best in show at the 140th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Tuesday night.
The Westminster Dog show went elegant for its 140th instalment late Tuesday, picking a German Shorthaired Pointer as its best in show over shaggier options.
No sooner had judge Dr Richard Meen tabbed CJ for the sport’s biggest prize than Nunes-Atkinson became the first breeder-owner-handler of a best in show victor since 1983, when Chris Terrell performed triple duties with an Afghan hound named Pepsi.
“It’s very frustrating, because they’re worthy of it. There’s lovely dogs”, longtime golden retriever breeder Michael Pickard said with a sigh.
CJ, who pranced across an expansive show floor at Madison Square Garden, will receive a trophy and embark on a media tour as the show’s champion.
“I can’t believe this”, Baez said after her dogs were announced as winners and she hugged her daughter Chelsea and her husband, Jose.
“It’s exactly like what I imagined”, she added, via ABC.
Though winners in their respective groups – sporting group, working group, etc. – none had the right ruff compared with CJ, god among dogs.
Nunes-Atkinson actually had two dogs in the running for Best in Show, as she is Lucy’s regular handler.
But while Dandies have been part of Westminster since its 1877 beginning, they’ve never won best in show.
It is no surprise that research shows petting a dog can quickly lower your blood pressure.
Owner Mai Ozeki said she was shocked when the dog advanced to the finals: “I’m nearly having a heart attack”, Ozeki said.
The award recognizes achievement in exemplary breed standards. The family has always had a soft spot for Dogues de Bordeaux, or French mastiffs, Baez said – they had one, Melanie, who died a few years ago. Instead, they wear bad suits from the 80’s and hosiery. “He’s a great German shorthaired pointer”.
