Germany Confirms 5 ‘Imported’ Zika Virus Cases Over Four Months
The CDC says the Zika virus, which may cause serious birth defects, is spreading rapidly in South and Central America.
Health Minister Jane Philpott said Wednesday that there have been no cases of locally transmitted Zika virus in Canada. Those are in Arkansas, New York, Virginia, and Minnesota.
Taylor told a news conference his agency is monitoring the situation as the virus spreads, particularly in South America.
This mosquito also carries the viruses that cause Dengue and Chikungunya which are of great public health concern in tropical countries like India.
Although WHO said that the Zika virus would not affect Canada or Chile, health officials in the Canadian capital said they had detected three cases in the country.
“The vast majority of people who contract Zika do not get seriously ill, and recover quickly when they do”, Scott Zoback, spokesman for the BPHC, said in a statement. According to a report in The Province, both persons have recovered, and neither case involved a pregnancy. Common symptoms of Zika virus disease – fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes – typically begin two to seven days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
However, with the onset of spring and summer, the risk of Zika virus transmission in Europe will grow, as mosquitoes find better breeding grounds in warmer climates. A causal relationship between Zika virus infection and birth defects and neurological syndromes has not been established, but is strongly suspected.
Microcephaly is when a newborn is born with a small head.
“One is that this mosquito is not here, that transmits these diseases, which is a really good thing”.
“When the virus did move into Brazil, that country did see a spike in cases of microcephaly”. Pakistan should also issue a strict travel ban on pregnant women and couples that are travelling to the affected countries. El Salvador have already advised women against getting pregnant until 2018.
